From a Dance MUM
Dear Dancer,
I’m so sorry you’ve picked up an injury and that dance & life feel up in the air. It’s time to take control of what you can control:
1) Tell someone about your injury – a parent, a dance teacher. I know saying it out loud makes it feel more real but if it hasn’t healed already all on its own, then treatment is required.
2) It’s okay to feel sad that you may have to miss out on lessons, a workshop you’ve been looking forward to or that show you’ve been working towards for ages. I promise opportunities will come around again!
3) Take your rehab seriously – consistency is key. Complete your exercises as you did your pre-pointe strengthening, your favourite amalgamations and splits preparation. This is the best way to focus your energy as every exercise takes you closer to your recovery goal! Build strength now so you can return with a smile.
4) Use this ‘bonus’ time – Is there something you have always wished you had time to do, but couldn’t fit it in between classes, festivals, competitions etc? Perhaps you wanted to learn a language, paint pottery or enjoy more social activities. Now is the time to seize the opportunity!
5) Take your time to ensure your recovery goals are met. I know you will be keen to get back to ‘normal’ as soon as possible, but the last thing you want is to put yourself back or pick up another niggle. Check-in with your physio/clinician before you return to training and make sure you understand exactly what you are ready for.
You WILL recover from this injury and you have the opportunity to come back stronger with a new respect for what your body is capable of!
Love,
A Dance Mum xx
